Coaching

The Sandwich Baseball Association coach must be a leader. All must recognize that they hold a position of trust and responsibility in a program that deals with a sensitive and formative period of a child's development.

It is required that the coach have understanding, patience and the capacity to work with children. The coach should be able to inspire respect. Above all else, coaches must realize that they are helping to shape the physical, mental and emotional development of young people.

While an adult with training and background in the game is a desirable candidate for a coach it is not a requirement of the Sandwich Baseball Association. The heart of SBA is what happens between the adult coach and player.

Children of Youth Baseball age are strongly influenced by adults whose ideals and aspirations are similar to their own. The coach and player share a common interest in the game, a desire to excel, and determination to win. Children often idolize their coaches, not because the adult is the most successful coach or mentor, but because the coach are a sources of inspiration.

All coaches will be required to complete a background check through JDP before being allowed to coach a team. This requirement is in place to help protect the children playing in the Sandwich Baseball Association and will be completed before the start of each season. SBA Coaches are also required to be CPR/AED certified before the start of the season.
